Fifty-seven years ago, Bertha O'Brien was a reporter for the Bergen Record. her assignment? Visit Bergen Pines on a weekly basis and write an article about any problems she discovered there. It wasn't very long before Bertha decided that if she was going to write about the needs of Long Term Care residents she should be doing something for them herself. She felt challenged by their loneliness, particularly during the Christmas season.
Going right to work, Bertha organized "The Maywood Caravan". This year will mark the 57th year the citizens of the town of Maywood, under Bertha's leadership, have paid a visit to Bergen Regional Medical Center. Complete with Santa Clause and children dressed as reindeer they visit and present gifts to every single resident in Building 11.
Bertha is 96 years young. She was the first official volunteer at this hospital and remain the number one example of what a caring heart can accomplish.
Volunteer Requirements
Volunteers working at Bergen Regional Medical
Center must fulfill the following:
Dress Code – The quality of patient/resident care is often judged by the appearance of staff and volunteers, it is essential that you dress in a professional manner. Volunteers are required to wear their ID Badge at all times.
Immunizations – Volunteers are required to have a Mantoux (PPD) test annually. This test is performed at no cost to the volunteer.Influenza vaccinations are available in the Fall of each year free of charge.
Customer Service – Patients and Residents come to us with diverse backgrounds, apprehensions, social and medical needs. Healthcare facilities themselves are strange and sometimes frightening places; we must be sensitive to patient and resident needs at all times.
